Places in Oak Island to Grab a Cold Beer
There's nothing quite like that first sip of an ice-cold beer after a long, perfect day on the sand. Oak Island is known for its laid-back atmosphere, and its local bars are no exception. Looking for a craft IPA with an ocean view, a domestic can with your toes in the sand, or a sports bar to catch the game? OKI has a stool waiting for you. Here are my top five favorite spots to grab a brew.
49th Street Grill
1. 49th St. Bar and Grill
Whether you’re looking to sit at the outside bar and listen to the band or sit inside and watch the game, this place has you covered for whatever mood strikes. With a mixed selection of craft beers and domestic favorites, 49th Street is the perfect, laid-back place to post up at the bar and spend a leisurely afternoon or evening.
Check out their Facebook Page for a calendar of events.
Scott’s Pick: a Pernicious IPA and a pound of hot garlic parm wings.
Paul’s of Oak Island
2. Paul’s of Oak Island
The ultimate sports bar, Paul’s has a wide selection of over 40 beers on draft, TVs playing all the games, and a fun selection of arcade games to occupy kids and adults alike. With most places on the island closing early, you can always count on Paul’s for your late-night fix. Open until midnight and serving food late.
Scott’s Pick: A Guinness, cheese curds, and their famous Smashburger.
Seahorse Eats & Drinks
3. Seahorse Eats & Drinks at Ocean Crest Pier
Located at the Ocean Crest pier, this is a local favorite. Take in the ocean views and rub elbows with some of Oak Island’s finest folks while enjoying a huge selection of craft beers on tap. Domestic favorites and wine are also available. Check out their calendar of events for awesome local bands, or let your inner rock star out at weekly karaoke. Take your drinks out to the bar overlooking the ocean and the pier to listen to the waves crash.
Scott’s pick: Hazy Days IPA by Leland Brewery
Lazy Turtle
4. Lazy Turtle
Channel your inner Jimmy Buffett. Picture picnic tables and umbrellas on the beach. Dig those toes into the sand and hang out for a while beachside at the Lazy Turtle. Don’t expect anything fancy here, just great beer, great food, and great service. Bring your pups to this perfect place to people-watch. If it rains, no worries, there’s plenty of space inside that still overlooks our gorgeous beach.
Scott’s Pick: An ice-cold can of Bud Light and cheese curds.
Tipsy Tuna
5. Tipsy Tuna
Picture your typical small-town bar serving up cold beer and hot food. Located at the East End of the island, the Tipsy Tuna, formerly Chasers, has a local and laid-back vibe. It’s the perfect place to unwind after a hard day’s work (even if the day’s work was going to the beach!) With a rotating tap selection and plenty of cold domestic cans in the fridge, you can’t go wrong.
Scott’s Pick: Hey Kona Big Wave and a Philly cheesesteak.
