Top 5 Sunset Spots on Oak Island

Oak Island is a magical place, but there’s something extra special about sunset. No matter what time of year, no matter where you are on the island, you’re never far from an amazing sunset experience. In the summer months, the sun sets late in the evening over the treetops. However, in the fall and winter months, the sun sets over the water. This is probably the most beautiful time to be on the island because the sun reflects off the water and lights up the dusk sky with striking colors of orange and pink. Make sure you build in time to your vacation or your daily life to catch as many sunsets as you can - you won’t be disappointed!

1. The Point: Head on down to the West End of Oak Island and park at either the Kings Lynn side or at the end of West Beach drive. The point is a special and unique place to the island, it is where the intracoastal waterway comes out and meets the ocean. No matter what time of year, sunsets are simply gorgeous. In the late fall and winter months, the sun sets out on the ocean, lighting up the evening sky ablaze with orange. In the summer months, the sun sets over the land but still provides and awe- inspiring evening view.

2. Ocean Crest and Oak Island Piers: The Town of Oak Island fishing pier is a leisurely stroll down to the end and back offering sweeping and expansive views of Caswell Beach, Bald Head Island, and the east end of Oak Island. The Ocean Crest fishing pier is more centrally located on the island which provides tremendous east and west views to watch the sun go down. The best part about catching sunset on one of the Piers is watching the water shimmer with the setting sun and the rising moon. This is definitely a great  option for a date night as well!

3. The West Oak Island Drive Fishing Pier: Drive west on Oak Island DriveWith more of a wooded view, catch the sunset sinking slowly over the tree tops and watch the night sky come to life. This is also a great place to watch all the boaters coming in after a day at sea. A small parking lot provides quick access to the fishing pier, but get there early to grab a seat. Pack your favorite beverage and relax as the day fades away!

4. The Fishing Dock at SW 6th St.: Take the golf cart out and about for a sunset drive, and head to the end of SW 6th St. You'll be greeted with a fishing pier that is perched over the Davis Canal. With eastern facing views towards the water tower and western facing views towards the point, this is one of Oak Island’s hidden gems. A quiet and intimate place to star gaze as well, this spot is loved by many locals and visitors alike. Bonus, this is also a great place to watch the fireworks over the 4th of July holiday!

5. Lonerider Bar and Grill & West 57th St. Waterway Access: You will see some of the most spectacular evening skies as the sun sinks down over the intracoastal waterway and casts a glow over the marshes surrounding the area. Sunset here is perfectly paired with a beer and a bite from Lonerider, a perfect and relaxing way to end any beach day.

Bonus - The Beach! In the winter, head on down to any beach access to see a sight to behold. We tend to visit 11th St. east because the sun will set over the water and the moon will rise over the pier. Grab your wide angle lens and take one of these breathtaking shots to remember your time on Oak Island.
